Key points of This Opening IPL Game
The 2020 Indian Premier League auction was carried out in December, so we now know which players will be playing for which team in the 13th season of the IPL. Although the tournament does not start until the end of March, many are already backing the Mumbai Indians to pick up their fifth title.
The final of the 2019 IPL was played between the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings. This was an epic final that the Mumbai Indians went on to win by just the one run. In a weird coincidence, the very first match of the 2020 IPL pits the same two teams against each other. If we are lucky, we could be in for yet another another thrilling encounter.
In last year’s edition of this competition, these two teams played each other four times and the Mumbai Indians came out on top every time. They won the first game by 37 runs, the second game by 46 runs, the third game by six wickets, and we already mentioned what happened in the final.
The Mumbai Indians seem to have the wood over the Chennai Super Kings at this moment in time.
A Closer Look at the Chennai Super Kings
The Chennai Super Kings have been one of the most consistent teams at the IPL – they have won the title three times, finished as runner-ups five times, came third once, and fourth once. They did not compete in the 2016 or 2017 editions of the tournament as they were suspended.
The key to their consistency is that they rarely make a lot of changes to their squad, ensuring that all of their players are familiar with how each individual plays. The players that their opponents will be concerned about are Faf du Plessis, MS Dhoni, Mitchell Santner, Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, and Josh Hazlewood.
While their batting line-up is pretty strong, we do not think that it is harsh to say that their main strength lies in their bowling department. If they bat first and put a solid score on the board, they will back their bowlers to be able to defend it. This could well be Dhoni’s last IPL appearance, so the team will be desperate to help him end his illustrious career on a high.
A Closer Look at the Mumbai Indians
The Mumbai Indians have managed to win this competition a record four times. In fact, those four wins have come in the last seven competitions, so they will be looking for their fifth win in eight.
When you look at their squad, you see why they are the early favourites to win the tournament. They just seem to have all the basis covered – in the batting department they have the likes of Rohit Sharma, Chris Lyn, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, and Quinton de Kock, while in the bowling department they have Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga, Trent Boult, and Nathan Coulter-Nile.
This seems to be the perfect case of if their batting attack do not get you, their bowling attack will. One thing that is certain is that their opponents will need to be at the top of their game if they want to turn the Mumbai Indians over.
This is Our Prediction
When these two teams get the 13th edition of the IPL underway on the 29th March there will be a lot of talented cricketers on show, that is for sure.
It really is a match that could go either way, but we are backing the Mumbai Indians to come out on top, but not by much mind you. We just think the Mumbai Indians have a little bit more in the batting and bowling departments.
So, our advice is to stick your money on a Mumbai Indian victory.
