If you have not heard about Ravi Ashwin’s Indian Premier League trade conundrum, then we are not exactly sure where you have been as it has been all over the sports news for quite a while now. It had even been reported that the deal was a no go because the Kings XI Punjab did not want to let their captain go.

A Deal Has Now Been Completed

The Kings XI Punjab and the Delhi Capitals have agreed on a deal. In exchange for their captain, the Kings XI Punjab were given 1.5 crores and spinner Jagadessha Suchith. They had originally wanted New Zealand’s Trent Boult as a replacement, but this could not be arranged in the end.

It is expected that the Delhi Capitals will also pay Ashwin 7.6 crores, which is his current auction value. This will be the fourth IPL team that he will have played for as he previously featured for Rising Pune Supergiants, Chennai Super Kings, and, of course, Kings XI Punjab.
The Kings XI Punjab captaincy will now be handed over to Indian international Kannur Rahul, who scored 593 runs in the 2019 IPL tournament at an average of 53.90.

Was This a Good Deal for the Delhi Capitals?

In his two seasons with the Kings Punjab XI, Ashwin played 28 matches and led them to twelve wins. Along the way, he picked up 25 wickets, with his best figures being 3/23. He scored 144 runs with the bat, with his highest score being 45. He doesn’t have many runs because he never usually gets much time to bat.

His best bowling season was in 2011 when he picked up 20 wickets at an average of 19.40. He has claimed more than 10 wickets in each of the last 9 IPL seasons and his economy has fluctuated between 5.84 and 8.09.

He has played 139 matches in the IPL, so experience is something that he is definitely not missing. Compare this to the experience of Jagadessha Suchith, who is going the other way. He played 13 matches for the Mumbai Indians in the 2015 edition, where he picked up 10 wickets at an average of 33.70 and an economy of 8.64. In the 2016 and 2019 tournaments, he played just the one game for the Delhi Capitals. He didn’t play at all in the 2017 and 2018 tournaments.

Anil Kumble, the head coach and the Director of Cricket Operations at Kings XI Punjab thanked Ashwin for the contribution to the team over the last two seasons and wished him all the best future. He also concluded by saying that Ashwin is one of the best spinners that the country has produced.

Therefore, overall, the Delhi Capitals should be really happy with the deal that they managed to thrash out.
