The 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup was the seventh T20 World Cup to take place since the inception of the tournament. It took place in UAE and Oman with the final on November 14 with a lot of upsets for T20 World Cup betting.

The tournament was originally supposed to take place in Australia in October 2020 but it was postponed until 2021 due to the worldwide pandemic. Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates were also being considered as alternative venues for the 2021 tournament. The top-9 ranked ICC Full Members, as well as the hosts India, were already pre-qualified for the tournament. All together, the following countries took part:

When did the First T20 World Cup Match Take Place?

The T20 World Cup is young when compared to the 50-over Cricket World Cup. The very first tournament took place in South Africa in 2007. While the ICC Cricket World Cup is played every four years (except in a couple of rare instances), this tournament has been quite sporadic, with it having taken place in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2021. Twelve teams competed in the 2007 tournament:

  • Australia
  • Bangladesh
  • England
  • India
  • Kenya
  • New Zealand
  • Pakistan
  • Scotland
  • South Africa
  • Sri Lanka
  • West Indies
  • Zimbabwe

The first-ever T20 World Cup game was between the West Indies and South Africa at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on the 11th September. In this match, Chris Gayle became the first batsman to score a century in a T20 international, which was an amazing win for those doing T20 World Cup Betting. On the 14th September, Sri Lanka took on Kenya in a group stage match and scored a whopping 260 runs from their twenty overs. To this very day, this is the highest total that has been posted in a World T20 match - an important note for your T20 World Cup betting strategy. Furthermore, Kenya were bowled out for a mere 88 runs, meaning they lost by a staggering 172 runs, which is still the biggest defeat in World T20 history.

On the 16th September, Australia played Bangladesh and Australian fast bowler Brett Lee took three wickets in three balls to become the first person to take a hat-trick in World T20. When it comes to all T20 international matches, only six other players have picked up a hat-trick. Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga leads the way with two hat-tricks; one against Bangladesh in April 2017 and one against New Zealand in September 2019.

On the 19th September India were taking on England and Yuvraj Singh brought up his fifty in just twelve deliveries, making him the scorer of the fastest fifty in a T20 international. This record has since been matched by Chris Gayle and Hazratullah Zazai. In the same match, Singh became the first player in T20 cricket to smash six sixes in one over. The unfortunate bowler on this day was Stuart Broad.

"These fun facts are interesting statistics. The better your cricket knowledge is, the more successful your T20 World Cup betting experience will be!"

How Many Teams Play at the T20 World Cup?

As mentioned earlier, twelve teams took part in the inaugural T20 World Cup, as was the same for the 2009, 2010, and 2012 competitions.

The teams that competed in the 2009 tournament were mostly the same as those that competed in the 2007 one, except that Ireland and the Netherlands took the places of Zimbabwe and Kenya, as they both reached the final of the World Twenty20 Qualifiers. Zimbabwe were due to compete, but withdrew due to political matters relating to Robert Mugabe.

Once again, the teams that took part in the 2010 event were mostly the same as those that played in the 2009 tournament, but Zimbabwe and Afghanistan replaced the Netherlands and Scotland.

The 2012 tournament saw the same nations compete that competed in the 2010 tournament.

The 2014 tournament saw sixteen teams competing for the very first time. All the full member nations qualified automatically, and they were joined by six associate teams that earned qualification in the 2013 ICC World T20 Qualifiers. These six teams were Afghanistan, Ireland, the Netherlands, Nepal, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The 2016 competition also involved sixteen teams, with Scotland and Oman replacing Nepal and the United Arab Emirates.

The tournament that is due to take place in India 2021 will feature 16 teams as well. These will be Australia, Pakistan, India, South Africa, New Zealand, West Indies, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, England, and the six best teams from the 2019 T20 World Cup Qualifiers.

Has the Tournament Changed Format over the Years?

The twelve teams that competed in the 2007 tournament were split into four groups of three, with the top two teams in each group going through to the second stage. This second stage was made up of two groups of four and the top two in each group qualified for the semi-finals. The format was the same for the 2009, 2010, and the 2012 editions.

The 2014 competition took on a slightly different format as there were four more teams involved. Bangladesh, Nepal, Hong Kong, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, the Netherlands, Ireland, and the United Arab Emirates were stuck into two groups of four for the first stage of the competition, with the two group winners qualifying for the Super 10 stage with the big boys. These ten teams were then split into two groups of five, and the top two teams from the two groups went on to compete in the semi-finals. The 2016 edition had the exact same format as the previous one.

The next tournaments from 2021 will have a similar format, with the only difference being that four teams will qualify from the first round into the Super 12 round, instead of two.

Which Teams Have Won the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup Trophy?

There have been several different winners of the ICC T20 World Cup over the years, which shows how competitive the tournament can be. Below is a table of the previous winners.

YearResult
2007India beat Pakistan at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, by 5 runs
2009Pakistan beat Sri Lanka at Lord's, London, by 8 wickets
2010England beat Australia at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, by 7 wickets

T20 Betting Strategy

One thing that you need to consider when betting on T20 cricket, whether you are betting on the IPL or making some T20 World Cup predictions, you need to know that in T20 cricket the cream always rises to the top. Thus, a good betting strategy to have when you are betting on individuals in a T20 game is to search for specialists that have a good T20 record. The best T20 batsmen will have excellent averages and strike rates, while the best bowlers will have the best economy rate and pick up wickets consistently.

T20 betting sites will usually give cricket bettors the chance to place bets before a match has started, but there should also be in-play betting, also known as live betting, available which helps to add to the excitement. The top bowler market closes when the game starts, but the top batsman market does not, and odds can fluctuate a lot during a game. There will be times when a team's top order fails and someone who scores a quick 40 batting at number six could finish as their side's top scorer. A few quick wickets can alter the complexion of a T20 game greatly, so a very good T20 betting strategy is to keep a close eye on the live odds and then pounce when you think you have found value.

Another good T20 betting strategy is to do some research before you go ahead and place a bet. For instance, if you are thinking about betting on the number of sixes a team will hit in a match, you should find out where the match is being played and what type of boundaries the stadium has. Some grounds have boundaries that are quite a bit shorter than the boundaries at other games, and this needs to be considered when you are making your bets.

General T20 Betting Tips

When it comes to making a T20 World Cup match prediction, there are some important factors that you need to take into consideration if you want to increase your chances of ending up on the winning side. You can find them all below for your convenience – we really do recommend that you keep these in mind when betting on the 2021 T20 World Cup or any other cricket event. After all, we all predict to win, so why not do everything in our power to improve our chances?

Pay Attention to the Pitch

In a game of cricket, no matter the format, the pitch can play a huge role in how both teams approach a match as well as the strategies that the batsmen and bowlers will make use of to succeed.

If a pitch has grass on it and it is grey overhead, then there will be swing. Thus, the bowling side will make sure that their fast bowlers are bowling more as they will get more assistance from the pitch. On the other hand, it the pitch is dry, there is no grass, and the sun is beating down, then it will likely assist the spin bowlers and they will bowl more.

Before you go ahead and place a bet on a cricket game, you should find out as much information about the pitch as possible as this can really aid you when you are betting.

Pay Attention to the Location Too

The venue can also prove to be important in a cricket match. For example, a team or players might have a history of struggling at a certain venue, and you need to know this before you go ahead and place any bets. If you are going to bet on a player to be the top scorer or top wicket taker in a match, then you should do a bit of research and see whether they have played at that venue before and, if they have, whether they were good or bad. If they have a history of performing badly at a venue, then do yourself a favour and put your money on something else.

Look at Recent Results

If you are thinking about betting on team to win a particular match, then we recommend that you take a quick look at how they have done in recent matches against their opponents. Cricket teams, just like teams in other sports, have their bogey teams that they always seem to struggle against, no matter which personnel they have playing for them. So, if you are thinking about betting on a team and then take a look at their recent performances against their opponents and see that they have often performed badly, then a good strategy is to look at something else to put your money on.

Back Players Who Are Used to Conditions

There is no doubt that cricket becomes easier to play when you are used to the conditions. If a cricketer is used to playing on a fast pitch and then has to play on a slow deck, then there is a good chance that they will struggle to start with until they get somewhat used to the new conditions. This is why before you bet on a player or a team, you should check whether they have played much recently in the conditions that they will face. For instance, in the T20 Cricket World Cup, it is wise to back the Indian players because they have just spent a month in the UAE playing in the IPL, so will know the conditions well.

The ICC Women's T20 World Cup

Another interesting market for your T20 World Cup betting is the Women's Cricket World Cup. The first ICC Women's T20 World Cup took place in England in 2009, two years after the inaugural men's competition in South Africa. There have been six other competitions since, and these took place in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, and the most recent one in 2020. Eight teams competed at the first three events, but this has since been increased to ten.

England have won the tournament once, Australia have won it four times, and the West Indies have won it once. The eighth edition is the next one, and it is due to take place in 2023 in South Africa. Just like with the ODI World Cup format, the women's ICC T20 World Cup is not as popular as the men's, but viewing stats have shown that more and more cricket fans around the world are tuning in to watch women’s cricket. Various markets have also opened in online cricket bookies that include the women's tournament in their T20 World Cup betting options.
