South Africa Are Coming off the Back of an Impressive Win Against Australia
South Africa just played Australia in a 3-match ODI series and they won each game pretty comfortably – they won the first match by 74 runs, the second by 6 wickets, and the third by six wickets. Many people, including us, thought Australia would win the series, but South Africa showed us that they are not to be underestimated.
India have recently returned from New Zealand, where they had a tour that they will be happy to forget as quickly as possible. They won the T20I series 2-1, but they then went on to lose the ODI series 3-0 and the test series 2-0. Many expected New Zealand to cause India some issues as the ball swings a lot over there, but not many would have expected such comprehensive defeats.
South Africa, some might say, are the form team, but India are playing at home and they are a different kettle of fish when they are playing at home in front of their adoring fans. Not only will they be looking to make amends for their poor showing in New Zealand, they will not want to let their fans down. This is why we are backing them to win the opening game of the series on the 12th March.
India Players to Look Out For
Virat Kohli: He is one of the world’s best batsmen and he can take a game away from a team without even breaking a sweat. When he comes out to bat, the South African bowlers will want to see the back of him as quickly as possible.
Shikhar Dhawan: However, before the South African bowlers start thinking about how they are going to get Kohli out, there is the little matter of trying to make sure that Dhawan does not cause carnage at the top of the order. With 17 ODI hundreds to his name, the South Africans will want to see him and his moustache returning to the pavilion sooner rather than later.
Jasprit Bumrah: All of India’s bowlers can pose a threat, but the one who the South Africans will be most wary of is Bumrah. When he gets it right, he is so hard to score off. In the 64 ODI matches that he has played, he as picked up 104 wickets at a very impressive average of 24.43.
South Africa Players to Look Out For
Quinton de Kock: When in full flow, there are fewer players in the world of cricket that are as pleasing to watch as de Kock is. He has the ability to play a wide variety of shots, which gives him the chance to score all around the wicket. He scores so fast that if he bats through the powerplay, the pressure will definitely be on India.
Lungi Ngidi: The youngster has only played 26 ODI matches for his country, but he has already picked up 53 wickets at a very impressive average of 21.51. His ability will be tested in India, but if he gets it right, he should be able to cause the Indian batsmen quite a bit of trouble.
Faf du Plessis: If you lose a couple of early wickets, the next person that you want to see walking to the crease would be du Plessis. He is calmness personified and he has plenty of talent to boot. In the 136 ODI innings that he has played for his country, he has scored over 5,500 runs at an average of 46.67. The Indian bowlers will not want him sticking around for too long.
Who We Think Will Win
Both of these teams have some class players, but India are formidable when they are playing on their own turf. We expect South Africa to give them a good game, but we think India will come out on top in the end.
