The fourth Test of the 2021-2022 Ashes series is upon us where England will be desperate to gain a victory. Played from the 5th - 9th at Sydney Cricket Ground from 05:00 IST, the incredibly powerful and in-form Australia, who have already secured the series win, will now have their sights set on a series whitewash.

England’s chances of winning back the Ashes dramatically disappeared with the thumping defeat at Adelaide in the third Test which gave Australia an unassailable 3-0 lead in the best of five game series. England will be surely focused on avoiding a humiliating 5-0 series defeat. Here is our cricket match prediction to give you all the up-to-date team and pitch information, while highlighting some interesting markets on the best betting sites for cricket .

Australia Team Preview

Cricket Australia will be ecstatic if they manage to secure a win in both the 2021 T20 World Cup and the Ashes series in the space of two months. It is difficult to foresee Australia losing either of the remaining two Tests, given the emphatic victories of the previous matches. Cricket Australia, and the T20 World Champions, can have one eye on their upcoming five matches against Sri Lanka starting in February, but will not look to make significant changes to a winning team.

Pat Cummins has lead Australia superbly, securing the Ashes in just 12 days of play. His bowling and that of Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland routed England in the last Test for their lowest innings score (68) against Australia in nearly 100 years. Boland’s fantastic performance in his red-ball debut (6 wickets for 7 runs in the second innings) justifiably earned him the Man of the Match award.

Left-handed batsman Usman Khawaja will now join the middle order. This is following a positive Covid test from batsman Travis Head who is now isolating. This will be Khawaja’s first Test in over two years and will bat at number five.

Other changes to the team include the side-lining of both Jhye Richardson and Josh Hazlewood who are still not 100% fit.

England Team Preview

After the abysmal performance seen in the third Test, on top of the lack of fight in the opening two test match cricket performances, England really need to refocus their efforts in the remaining Tests to achieve some face-saving for the Ashes series. England are battling to avoid a third 5-0 whitewash in Australia in the last 15 years, which also includes a 4-0 defeat.

Stuart Broad will be replacing fellow seamer and top wicket taker Ollie Robinson in the upcoming Test. Robinson is rested due to a slight shoulder injury. Broad was left out of the first and third Tests where the pitches were green and rather seamer-friendly and faces a challenge at Sydney on a fast and hard wicket. He will add to his 150th England cap he gained playing in the second Test. This replacement will be the only change in the team following the third Test last week.

Joe Root will set a record by captaining England for the 60th time and pass the 59 set by his predecessor Alastair Cook.

Root and Dawid Malan, the only two players to pass 50, will again have an enormous amount of pressure on their shoulders to score a bulk of the runs and give a platform for the England bowlers. Despite having batters of proven quality and experience, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, and Jonny Bairstow have all been underwhelming. England have been dismissed for under 200 in four of the six innings across the three Tests. So far, only Root has managed to better his batting average from the previous year. Perhaps a team and individual refocus will see a batting turnaround and higher scores, not least by the openers.

Toss Prediction

This one is slightly tricky to predict as there are a couple of factors that will come into play. In the history of matches played at this ground however, there has been a fairly even split of victories for teams deciding either to bowl first or bat first. If the conditions are right for batting, especially regarding the weather, the team who wins the toss will likely bat first. The average first innings score is 317 and gives at least some indication where we could expect to see in the first innings, especially if Australia win the toss and bat first.

Pitch Conditions

Sydney Cricket Ground is a pitch to offer something both for the batters and bowlers and will start hard and quick. As the Test progresses, the spinners will undoubtedly be in their element as Sydney is one of the most spin-friendly international venues in Australia. Thundery showers are likely to interrupt much of the expected play, so keep this in mind while online cricket betting.

Our Match Prediction

If you have been betting on the Ashes and placed a series win for Australia, you will of course be feeling very comfortable in your decision. While we know who will win the Ashes, the upcoming Tests are the last opportunities for England to battling to avoid a whitewash.

Australia have been ruthless so far and unless England manage to reset their mentality and manage to get themselves out of this rut, it looks like they are in for another thrashing from Australia. However, if you have any hopes riding on England and enjoy betting on the Ashes, there are some fantastic odds that would certainly return some large winnings your way.
