A T20 Series That is Full of Promises
The Afghanistan and Irish cricket team will play three T20 matches in India in March. Both these teams will be taking part in the ICC T20 World Cup that will take place later in Australia this year, so this will be great practice for both. It will be even better preparation for Afghanistan as they will soon be taking part in the Asia Cup.
This two teams are quite evenly matched, so we expect it to be a very interesting series with close matches. Many cricket fans from other countries probably will not even tune in or pay any attention to this series because these are two minnows of the cricketing world. However, they might end up missing out if they do.
Both these two teams have players that are capable of hitting the ball long distances or bamboozling batsmen with their skillful bowling. Afghanistan might not have won a single game at the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019, but they caused a number of issues for some teams. In fact, Indian fans will remember the scare that the Afghanistan team gave them.
The three matches will take part at the Greater Noida Sports Complex Ground.
Afghanistan Players to Look Out For
Rashid Khan: He is only 21 years old, but he is already the captain of his national side. It is no wonder though as he is their best player and is readily sought-after when competitions such as the IPL come around. He has played 41 T20I matches and has picked up 79 scalps at an average of 12.00. To add to this, he can also hold a bat pretty well. These figures are mightily impressive and Ireland will be extremely wary of his talents.
Mohammad Nabi: When it comes to striking the ball, we think it is safe to say that none in the Afghanistan team can hit it as far as Nabi can. The Irish bowlers will know that if they miss their mark by a fraction, they will be deposited into the crowd. Not only can he strike a clean ball, but he is also a very handy bowler too, having picked up 69 wickets at an average of 26.95. Ireland will want to keep him quiet.
Hazratullah Zazai: This youngster is new to T20I cricket, having only played 6 matches, but he already holds the record for the highest score by an Afghanistan batsman in T20I history. In a match against Ireland in 2019, he smashed 162 runs from just 62 balls, so the Irish are more than aware of the damage that he can cause at the top of the order.
Irish Players to Look Out For
Kevin O’Brien: There are many explosive batsmen out there and it is fair to put O’Brien into this category. You only need to ask the Hong Kong cricket team as he smashed 124 against them in 2019. His batting average is only 20.65, but Afghanistan will know that if he comes in a smashes a quick 20 or 30 towards the end of the innings then it can be the difference between winning a losing.
Paul Stirling: He is one of Ireland’s most experienced players having played 73 T20I matches and he has scored over 2,000 runs at an average of 30.66. Afghanistan will want him out pretty quickly because if he bats through the powerplay then they know that they could be chasing a big score.
Boyd Ranking: When it comes to bowlers, Afghanistan will be most wary of Rankin. He has played 48 T20I matches and has picked up 53 wickets at an average of 21.47, which is very good for this format of the game where batsmen are constantly trying to tank you out of the park. He is a very tall man, so the Afghanistan batsmen will be wary of the bounce that he can get.
Who Do We Think Will Win?
There are great players on both teams, but we think that Afghanistan just have a tiny bit more quality than the Irish side, so we are backing them to win this first T20I match.
