How Have Both Teams Been Getting On?
This is a match between two teams who are out of form and desperate for a win. The Adelaide Strikers have lost their last three games, but the Melbourne Renegades, who came into this tournament as defending champions, are having a terrible competition, having not one won game from the eight that they have played.
The Adelaide Strikers’ last game was against the Sydney Sixers, but they could only manage 135 runs from 19.4 overs. Rashid Khan took an impressive 4 wickets for 22 runs in his four overs, but that was not enough to see his team to an important win. In the end they lost by two wickets.
The Melbourne Renegades were playing the Melbourne Stars and they managed to score a decent 168 runs from their 20 overs. However, their bowlers found Glenn Maxwell in inspired form and his 83 runs from just 45 balls saw the Stars home with 10 balls remaining.
Adelaide Strikers Team News
Alex Carey will miss this match as he has been selected for the Australian team to take on India in three ODIs, so we will likely see Travis Head take his place, while Harry Nielsen will likely to take over the job of wicket-keeping.
The Strikers have a number of great T20 players, but it is safe to say that the Renegades will be most wary of Rashid Khan. The Afghanistan international is a fantastic bowler and already has 12 wickets in this year’s competition. Not only can he bowl, but he is also very handy with the bat. If given the chance, he will add vital runs down the order at a quick pace.
When it comes to their batsmen, Jake Weatherald is one to keep an eye on. In the last game against the Sydney Sixers he smashed 47 runs of 31 balls, making him the franchise’s leading runscorer in the history of the BBL. Jonathan Wells has also batted extremely well so far in this competition, so we would not be surprised if he stamped his authority on this game.
Melbourne Renegades Team News
The ODI series against India has come at a very bad time for the Renegades as it means they will be without Aaron Finch and Kane Richardson yet again, two of their better players. This means that Marcus Harris will continue to play at the top of the order while Tom Cooper will probably come in to replace Richardson.
The Strikers will be most wary of Shaun Marsh as when he gets going he can be very tricky to stop. He showed this in the last game when he smashed 63 runs from just 43 balls. That innings now means that he is just 27 runs shy of 6,000 runs in T20. In this year’s tournament he has scored 298 runs, making him one of the form players. The Strikers will want him back in the pavilion as soon as possible.
The Renegades are being let down by their bowlers, who are proving to be rather expensive. With Richardson and Harry Gurney not playing, the pressure will fall on Richard Gleeson to deliver. He has taken a handful of wickets this tournament, but he has just bowled too many bad balls as well. The Renegades will be hoping that he turns a corner on Sunday, but we are not too optimistic.
Our Prediction for the Match
These two sides met on the 29th December 2019 and the Adelaide Strikers walked away with the points thank to Phil Salt’s 54 runs from 26 balls. We fully expect the Strikers to break their three game losing streak on Sunday by beating the Renegades quite comfortably.
Unfortunately for fans of Melbourne Renegades, we do not see an end to their misery anytime soon. They just have too many players who are not performing as well as they can. We would be very surprised if we were wrong here.
