The inaugural ICC World Test Championship got underway at the beginning of August when England and Australia started their Ashes campaign. It is still early days, but India are currently sitting at the top of the table and, going by the odds you will find at different bookmakers, many believe that they will still be there come the end of the tournament.
The Story So Far
India have played three matches so far and have won them all, giving them a total of 160 points. They are currently 1-0 up in a three-match series against South Africa, so, depending on how the final two tests go, they could find themselves even farther ahead of their competitors.
New Zealand and Sri Lanka are both on 60 points having played one series each, while Australia and England (after they drew their Ashes series 2-2) find themselves on 56 points each. South Africa and West Indies are yet to open their accounts, while Pakistan and Bangladesh have not played yet.
At this moment in time, bookmakers are offering odds of 4/5 (1.80 if you prefer decimals) for India to lift the trophy in June 2021.
Three Other Teams Are in With a Fighting Chance
However, just like the night being followed by the day, India will have to fight off a number of challenges if they are to become the first team to lift the Test Championship trophy.
If India don’t carry on with their top form, then Australia is the next favourite to go on to lift the cup. The bookmakers currently have them at odds of 11/4 (3.75). New Zealand and England, according to the bookies, are in also in with a fighting chance of winning the tournament. The Black Caps are currently priced at 7/1 (8.00), while you can back the Poms to win at odds of 8/1 (9.00).
What about the Other Five Teams?
We all know that anything is possible in cricket, so if you like to take a risk when you are gambling, you could think about placing a bet on one of either West Indies, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, or Bangladesh to be celebrating come June.
If we are being honest, betting on one of these to win is probably just like throwing your money down the drain, but you are free to bet on whatever you like.
At this moment in time, South Africa is priced at 12/1 (13.00), while you can back Pakistan to go all the way at odds of 25/1 (26.00). Sri Lanka can be backed at odds of 50/1 (51.00). If you are feeling particularly risky you can stick some money on the West Indies or Pakistan to win at odds of 100/1 (101.00).
